  • The Sammy Film Music Awards Celebrates 30th Anniversary!

Now in its 30th year, the Sammy Film Music Awards (SFMA) were announced on  February 18, two weeks before the Oscar telecast.

THE SFMA (or “Sammys”) are the longest-running awards for recordings of film scores and songs.  These awards are named in honor of movie lyricist, Sammy Cahn (1913-1993), who received 4 Oscars for his song lyrics, all of them recorded by Frank Sinatra during the 1950s and 1960s. Sammy Cahn also received the first Emmy for a television song, “Love and Marriage,” another hit record for Frank Sinatra.

The Sammy Film Music Awards (SFMA) have been chosen each year by Roger Hall, a member of the International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA), Managing Editor of Film Music Review (FMR), and the author of the popular book, A Guide to Film Music – Songs and Scores, now in its 7th edition.

The composer who has received the most Sammy Film Music Awards is no surprise –  John Williams, now with 15.  Next is another current favorite – Alexandre Desplat with 5 awards.
