Best of 2010: Video Game Music
Most video game music is now available as digital downloads only. I've had my share of proprietary conversations with the marketers and distributors who send out music from these games for review. Let's just say that it's not just the games themselves that are kept under such tight secrecy! That said, a lot of great music is being written for video games that gives some of our film scores these days a run for the money. There are two scors that stand out to me from 2010: Dark Void by Bear McCreary and Russell Shaw's music for Fable III. Both are available from Sumthing Else records. I love McCreary's television scores and hearing him work in this setting was just another treat. Shaw's score is takes its cues from Elfman and moves on from there with wonderful results.
One of the best things about the scores for these games is that they tend to retail at a lower price so you get some great music to enjoy that is commercially intended to be engaging in ways that most film scores are not.
