A Store experience
Nothing big on the horizon today. But, I went to one of the large box book and music stores, coupon in hand, to pick up the Varese Sarabande 3-disc set of Rosza music that was just released. I was figuring that having seen them stock the Waxman and Goldsmith bargain sets that they would have this as well. Well, wouldn't you know it that I had to ask to see if this was in the store. The kind clerk, who was actually of the genereation that would even know who Rozsa was, looked it up and said that there was no indication that they would be not carry this, but that I could "order" it.
Now I don't get why anyone would go to any chain store in the age of the internet and then pay at least $2-$4 more for something they don't have just so you can drive back a week later to pick it up. Even if you ordered it online and paid for shipping it would be cheaper.
On top of this, this particular store had seen fit to have on stock 6 copies of the score to Premonition. I have nothing against Klaus Badelt (I even picked him several years ago as a name to watch), but does it not seem odd that the market audience would trend toward a Rosza set that was priced a few dollars more for 3 discs than for the single disc new score? They are even on the same label!
While I am at it, I realized that I have been collecting CDs for a long time. How did I figure this out? I picked up 4 different discs with new covers and artwork that looked interesting only to discover that they are the same recordings of CDs I already have (performance, and artists/orchestra). Is it really necessary to glut the market with the same recording over and over again when the market is slow any way for this musical style? It's not like there is any attempt to actually build an audience here. Argh!
Well that's my thoughts for today. I am debating going to see the new Spiderman movie Friday. Can I just say that HOT FUZZ is hilarious, though I liked Shaun of the Dead better. Catch it before it disappears.
